How I Keep My Teeth White and Healthy

Hi friends! This year I vowed to take better care of my teeth after having to get a painful cavity filled. You don’t realize how important the health of your teeth are until you get a painful gum or tooth infection, ouch! Now that I am taking better care of my teeth, my teeth are A LOT stronger and whiter and I am totally loving it. See below for how I keep my teeth healthy and clean!

Oil Pulling

I started oil pulling every morning to remove bacteria and prevent tooth decay, bad breath, inflammation, and whiten my teeth. Make sure to do it first thing in the morning and it helps to do it when you’re taking a shower so you can swish longer!

Find a GOOD doctor

Brushing your teeth and flossing alone is not enough to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Growing up, I always had teeth issues (fun fact, cavities are highly genetic)! I was literally a pre-teen with multiple fillings, root canals, and gum issues, which was super traumatizing. Because of this, I’ve always been afraid of going to the dentist but it is so important for your overall health, not just for your mouth. In fact, regular checkups help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other scary medical issues. Decay and bacteria from your mouth literally gets swallowed into your bloodstream, so it is very important to take this seriously. A good tip I recommend is to brush your teeth first thing when you wake up, oil pull and tongue scrap, then you can have a big glass of water after all of that. If you drink water first thing after sleeping, your swallowing all of the gunk that your body has “detoxed” throughout the night – yuck! As far as finding the right dentist, I personally recommend Metro Decatur Dental Group PC which is based in Decatur, Georgia. I had been “shopping” around for a new dentist for years, and I finally found the right practice for me. They have flexible appointment times and provided all of the necessary paperwork beforehand. They also provide treatment for tooth loss, dental cosmetics and advanced restorative dentistry.

These were my big dental concerns: a failed root canal from a previous dentist, gum sensitivity and yellow teeth due to my tea and coffee obsession! What I love about Metro Decatur Dental Group is that they take the time to customize your appointment based on your personal and physical dental needs. My experience has always been consistent, which is really important to me. What I first liked about their office is that they always ensured that I was comfortable throughout the appointment, even during a cleaning. A lot of people skip dental appointments completely due to anxiety, so this is a really important factor to consider when you are choosing your dentist! They also provide implants and dentures in their office which is super convenient. Dr. Gary Simms, DDS can make your teeth super white as well due to his teeth bleaching technique! I was worried to try teeth whitening due to sensitivity concerns, but Dr. Simms is able to lighten your smile 8-10 shades within a single hour of treatment. Throughout the process you won’t have to worry if he is doing too much because he is very careful and has a conservative technique. They have four teeth bleaching options so that you can find the one that works best for you and your teeth. I had never bleached my teeth before and I thought that it was going to be painful, but it was very simple and easier than I thought! Also, you will love Dr. Gary Simms, DDS’ caring and calm demeanor, which makes the experience more pleasant.

Dr. Simms’ staff is also very open to answering all of your questions! We discussed dental insurance, which of course is a huge one, office hours to make sure it fit my schedule, his approach on preventative dentistry, how to prepare for dental procedures, the cost of x-rays, oral exams, and fillings, and if they have a missed-appointment policy, etc. They immediately passed my personal test, which is that I always have to make sure that the office and equipment are very clean and that they wear gloves and protective material. Dr. Simms has also encouraged me to be a better brusher (3x a day with FLOSSING every night)! As much as we hear it, we always tend to skip the floss part or the mid-day brushing. I keep a travel-size brush in my purse and brush now after lunch! If you don’t have time to brush, gargle and swish water right after a meal – it really does help pull out particles and bacteria out of your teeth! When you start to take your dental health seriously, you will naturally get in the habit of doing these steps! I hope this post helped you better understand the importance of finding the right dentist!

Until next time,

Elle
